Hustle Preview: Adam Sandler Finds a Second Shot in the NBA
"Hustle" is a 2022 sports drama starring Adam Sandler as Stanley Sugerman, a weary Philadelphia 76ers scout who discovers a raw, overlooked basketball talent in Spain and risks everything to get him into the NBA. Directed by Jeremiah Zagar, the film blends an underdog sports story with a grounded, character-driven performance from Sandler.
The Story
Stanley Sugerman has spent years travelling the world for the 76ers, searching for players who can change a franchise’s fortunes. During a scouting trip abroad, he encounters Bo Cruz, played by real-life NBA player Juancho Hernangómez—a gifted but troubled athlete with the potential to become a once-in-a-lifetime find.
When Stanley’s professional position becomes uncertain, he stakes his own future on preparing Bo for the NBA Draft. The film follows their uneasy partnership as talent, family pressure, self-doubt and institutional politics threaten to derail the dream.
Why It Stands Out
Rather than leaning into broad sports-comedy antics, "Hustle" gives Sandler a more restrained, dramatic role. Critics noted that the film captures the rhythm and atmosphere of professional basketball while showcasing his stronger dramatic instincts.
The movie also benefits from its basketball authenticity: Hernangómez is a former NBA player, while the cast and cameos include figures from across the league. That gives the film a credible, lived-in feel for NBA fans, even when its narrative follows familiar underdog beats.
